CDS

What is the CDS exam?

The CDS exam is administered by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) to choose applicants for admission to the Officers Training Academy (OTA), Air Force Academy (AFA), Indian Naval Academy (INA), and Indian Military Academy (IMA). Combined Defence Services Examination is the full name of CDS. The head of the Indian Armed Forces is assigned the title of Chief of Defence Staff, though some people also use the full form of CDS. We have covered the full form of CDS in detail in this article.

To select applicants for the Officers Training Academy (OTA), Indian Naval Academy (INA), Indian Military Academy (IMA), and Indian Air Force Academy (AFA), the CDS exam is administered twice a year. An SSB interview follows a written exam as part of the CDS exam selection process.

English and General Knowledge are the two sections of the test used to gain admission to OTA. The duration of each section is two hours.

The test has a total score of 200 for OTA and 300 for IMA, INA, and AFA. OTA receives 200 marks for the SSB interview, whereas IMA, INA, and AFA receive 300 marks each. There are two steps in the SSB interview process: I and II. Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) tests, the Picture Perception Description Test (PP&DT), group testing officer tasks, psychology tests, and conferences. Interviews are all part of the first stage of the SSB interview.

What is the CDS Syllabus 2025?

Three subjects make up the UPSC CDS syllabus: general knowledge, English language, and elementary mathematics. Candidates should be aware that only those who have applied for IMA, INA, and AFA are eligible to take Elementary Mathematics. Candidates can determine which subjects and chapters to cover for the test by looking over the CDS syllabus. Candidates who are getting ready for the CDS exam should review past years’ question papers to determine the key subjects.

CDS Exam Pattern 2025

The UPSC prescribes the CDS exam pattern for IMA, INA, AFA, and OTA. The test is administered offline, using pen and paper. The general knowledge and mathematics question paper is bilingual, meaning it is available in both Hindi and English. Only objective-style questions are included in the written exam. English, General Knowledge, and Elementary Mathematics are the three sections of the written exam required for admission to IMA, INA, and AFA.

The exam lasts six hours and has a total score of 300. English and General Awareness are the two written exam sections required for admission to OTA. The test lasts four hours and is worth 200 marks. Incorrect responses also carry a penalty. For each wrong response, candidates lose one-third of their score. Those who pass the written test are invited to the SSB interview. The following is the CDS exam pattern for the written exam:

CDS Marking Scheme 2025

The following is the CDS marking scheme:

  • For the correct answer, candidates score one mark.
  • For incorrect answers, 1/3 mark is deducted.
  • More than one option is treated as incorrect.
  • There is no negative marking for questions left unanswered.

CDS Exam Pattern for SSB Interview

Those who pass the written CDS exam are invited to an SSB interview. The four-day SSB interview process consists of two stages. The following lists the steps of the SSB interview:

Stage I includes the Picture Perception & Description Test (PP&DT) and the Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) tests.

Stage II includes conferences, psychology tests, group testing officer tasks, and interviews.

CDS Selection Process

The written exam and the SSB interview are the two phases of the CDS selection process. Those who pass the written test are invited to the SSB interview. Candidates must receive the minimum qualifying scores in the written exam and the SSB test, which are set by the Commission and the Service Selection Board, respectively, in order to be accepted.

Based on their combined scores from the written exam and the SSB tests, the candidates will be ranked in order of merit. The final decision will be made based on merit, taking into account the number of open positions, medical fitness, and suitability in all other areas.
